Canadian megastar Abel Tesfaye (as "himself"), who uses the moniker "The Weeknd," is struggling to get through his tour because he's heartbroken over a breakup and his vocal chords aren't cooperating, which has his manager Lee (Barry Keoghan) frustrated with him - elsewhere, a young woman named Anima (Jenna Ortega) sets her own home on fire and then attends a concert of his with the intention of meeting him. One would think after the embarrassment that was The Idol on HBO making another "fictionalized" version of The Weeknd's "life" wouldn't be the wisest move but here were are ... and the result is a pointless exercise in ego soothing, where both Tesfaye and Ortega take turns appearing despondent while the camera records them repeatedly tearing up, and it's all set to songs from his same-named record. The intent, I believe, is to show this persona of his as a "drug-addicted lothario" who has a history of casually using and then tossing women away and then becoming distraught when the game is turned against him: oh, boo-hoo. Only the R&B singer's most hardcore fans might find any value in this - everyone else should run for the hills.
