I Don't Understand You

Married couple Dom (Nick Kroll) and Cole (Andrew Rannells), who are desperate to adopt a child, go on vacation to Italy for their anniversary where they find out via video chat that single mother Candice (Amanda Seyfried) has selected them to parent her baby boy, but run into trouble when they drive around The Boot looking for the "restaurant" of famed cook Zia Luciana (Nunzia Schiano), their vehicle becomes stuck in the mud during a rainstorm and then the language barrier causes all sorts of mishaps.  It's supposed to be a "black comedy" with the "accidents" and "twists" that take place, except the characters seem to lack any kind of logical abilities and are hopelessly narcissistic, so the movie's asking you to "empathize" with two individuals incapable of feeling remorse.  It could just be a (bad) metaphor for how Americans behave while travelling, although it can also be "read" in other ways I don't think were intended: the fact that Dom and Cole, like directors Craig and Crano, are homosexuals that "get away" with mass murder (and even destroy evidence) isn't exactly a glowing endorsement of their community.  Or maybe they only wanted the audience to "squirm" and didn't contemplate anything else ... in which case, the tone needed major adjustments.
