Reflection in a Dead Diamond

Director: Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani
Year Released: 2025
Rating: 1.5

Retired secret agent John Diman (Fabio Testi) is spending his twilight years on the Côte d'Azur with a trove of stolen diamonds when a young lady he's been ogling gets poisoned, which kicks in flashbacks of his younger days (here played by Yannick Renier) and his battles with a dangerous assassin known as Serpentik (Thi Mai Nguyen).  For the married French filmmaking duo of Cattet and Forzani, this is their deconstructed take on European spy movies and, as usual, their main area of interest is in creating stunning psychedelic shots and props (an eyeball ring that shoots out a laser beam, a self-destructing dress, Serpentik's razor-sharp fingernails) than anything resembling a coherent narrative.  Those with a preference for flashiness over 'traditional' storytelling might want to have a look; I watched this sober and alert, which is not the mindset you should be in.
